BMS Ecofit is a framework that is about the asking of questions, and hopefully the finding of answers. It represents my lifelong curiosity about the human condition; the what, how and why of how we live our lives.
Through BMS Ecofit I hope to bring together a community of fellow seekers, in the hope of sharing products, services and knowledge the helps all of us become more EcoFit.
What is it to be EcoFit?
EcoFit is a shorthand version of Ecological Fitness. To understand what I mean by this, I need to explain my understanding of these terms
𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 is the study of the relationships between organisms and their environment, and the balances between these relationships.
It is this concept of balance that that first interested me in the subject. It was a first year course sometime in the early 1990’s, and we we discussing about when there is an abundance of food, a population will flourish (I think the population was some sort of rodent). It will continue to flourish until there is no longer an abundance of food (because they have eaten it all), then the population will decline. This will cycle, until a state of homeostasis is reached.
I look at individuals, and feel that there needs to be a better understanding of the relationships between our body, mind, and soul, and then collectively between the individual, and the world around them.
𝗙𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 can be defined in so many ways. There is no definition that will not cause endless debate. How i choose to see fitness, is as the quality of being suitable for a particular role or task. That role could be a general as being a healthy, happy person, or as specific as being a good father, wife, friend, or employee.
I see each person as being the sum of three parts; body, mind and soul.
The 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 represents the physical, and looks as behaviors such as diet, exercise, sleep and hydration
The 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 is all about how we think. Are we processing well; focused, seeing things clearly? Are we learning, and improving our knowledge of the world and out place in it? How are we coping? Are we overwhelmed, or feeling lazy? Are we identifying what needs to be done, and doing it effectively?
The 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗹 is about how we feel. Are we happy, sad, satisfied, optimistic, at peace, or angry, disillusioned or despondent.
There are 3 levels at which Ecological Fitness can be studied
- 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 – each of the elements of body, mind and soul
- 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 – the elements of body, mind and soul
- 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 – the interaction of a person with the world around them
So that is an outline (that I was hoping to keep brief) of the thinking behind BMS Ecofit. Please engage, and become part of this journey.
